The closed-circuit television footage from the January 19 assassination of Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh reveals –among other things– interesting details of spy craft in action. Prominently featured is the use of fake wigs, beards and other facial hair, which the Mossad assassination team members employed in order to disguise themselves. Spies, therefore, really do use fake beards, moustaches, glasses, as well as other props in ground operations, known as ‘light disguise’ in espionage lingo. The obvious reason for such props is disguising the visual identity of the operative from potential witnesses. But there are other reasons too, such as evading facial recognition systems, which tend to rely on cheekbone and jaw-line coordinates. Human intelligence operatives are also taught to employ disposable light disguise props in order to attract the attention of witnesses, to the detriment of other, more permanent visual identity features. The aim is to entice witnesses to focus on the visual power of temporary props, which are eventually disposed of by the operatives, thus resulting in ineffective police descriptions. Such features may include outrageous moustaches, distinctive limps, false facial scars, etc. Notably, one of the Mossad assassination squad members that killed al-Mabhouh, is seen in CCTV footage sporting a distinctive straw boater hat, which eclipsed from fashion in the mid-1930s, and are rarely seen today.

There’s an unusual Daily Mail article about Erika Maria Chambers, an Israeli spy who supposed helped assassinate Ali Hassan Salameh in 1979. The article doesn’t quite say it, but instead puts pictures of her next to the Dubai photos of “Gail Folliard”, the only woman identified with the group. This seems to imply that “Gail Folliard” is, in fact, Erika Chambers (with a lot of plastic surgery, I assume).

The Dubai chief of police has now called for the arrest of Meir Dagan, the head of Mossad stating, “Our investigations reveal that Mossad is involved in the murder of al-Mabhouh,” General Tamim said. “It is 99 per cent, if not 100 per cent, that Mossad is standing behind the murder.”
Police in Dubai said that they would release new evidence in the coming days that proves that the assassination can be traced to the Mossad headquarters in Herzliya, a suburb north of Tel Aviv. Officials have never ruled Mossad out of their investigation but have stopped short of accusing the Israeli spy agency directly until now.
